West Texas Athletics Director is Historic Female Hire

​In 1987, the National Girls and Women in Sports Day (#NGWSD) was first celebrated to serve as acknowledgement of the amazing accomplishments of the girls and women in sports. 

National Girls and Women in Sports Day was officially adopted by the United States Congress during the first week of February.

​Marfa ISD Athletics Director, Linda Ojeda sat down with our "Down the Line" podcast team to discuss her journey through the sports world, from a standout high school athlete to stand out Varsity Sports Administrator.

Here are few stats about women in sports:

- Boys Athletics get 1.1 Million more sports opportunities annually through scholarships than girls. 

- Nearly 40% of teen girls are not actively participating in varsity sports, an all time low.

- More than 75% of working women participated in some varsity sport and credit sports to building self-image.

- A young girl is 80% more likely to finish college if she plays just one varsity sport for three years in high school.
